The Interplay

Our world is hurtling towards new frontiers at breakneck speed – speed that we have not seen in prior eras; speed that is underpinned by the acceleration of technologies of all shapes and forms; those technologies in turn drive business and societal innovations.

These technologies include not only digital technologies such as telecom, internet, cloud, AI, etc. but also materials technology from chemicals to molecular technologies and nanotech. In fact, the world of materials and the world of digital technologies are reinforcing each other.

Examples include AI enabling the discovery of new materials and drugs while those new materials in turn power new hardware for digital technologies.

We not only have a convergence of all kinds of technologies, but also the acceleration of the ever-present interplay between technology, business, and society.

The discussions in this site are to connect the dots between all forms of technologies, business, and society – informed by decades of insights on how technologies have shaped business and the world we live in.

The Art of Ridesharing

How ridesharing has changed labor markets and the nature of employment

Connected Product Lifecycle

How connectivity and computing have changed lifecycle of a physical product

Healthcare and Technology

How technology is changing healthcare and services

1. The Art of Ridesharing

After a decade in the making, we have come to take ridesharing for granted. How ridesharing has shaped the gig economy and its implications for what employment and organization of labor are still in its early stages. Ripple effects are still being felt in new labor laws and the future of work itself. How technology is changing healthcare and services

The transition from good-old cabs to ridesharing to a future of autonomous taxis as shown here makes for a good read.

2. Connected Product Lifecycle

The infusion of connectivity and smarts (computing) in these products has impacted the entire lifecycle of the product for the builder and the buyer, across the four lifecycle stages of design, manufacture, procure, and use.

We are now designing for manufacturing and consumption – buying and using the product.

This illustration depicts the lifecycle of a physical thing – a product of the builder, an asset of the buyer.

For centuries, the lifecycle of a physical product involved its design, manufacturing, procurement by buyers, and its use.

Changes to the lifecycle of a product have profound implications for every industry involved

  • How each stage of this lifecycle is impacted by digital and material technologies.
  • How entire industries are impacted by this change from supply-side to demand side of goods innovating to or faced with challenges
  • How business models are changing due to buyer and user behavior

3. Healthcare and Technology

Healthcare, one of the most complex industries – is being changed by a combination of molecular, digital, and materials technologies.

Historically, health services had been enabled by medical devices and pharmaceuticals, each of them founded on materials and molecular technologies.

The arrival of digital technologies has spurred innovations in health services, clinical and operational workflows, new medical devices, and drug discovery.

The picture depicts how 3 types of technologies come together to create new medical devices and procedures that in turn power new health services like telemedicine or enhance existing services such as diagnostics. See full article here.

During the pandemic, we saw telework and telehealth accelerate. Zoom calls became the norm. But even in the unseen parts of our industries, automation accelerated. Robotics in factories and even retail locations, for example.
Some would say what years of “digital transformation” could not do was accomplished by the pandemic in less than a year. So true for telework and telehealth especially.

Technology-Business-Society — An Interplay on Steroids

We have heard the word convergence used to describe multi-technology integration – from physical to digital technologies, and how it will accelerate over the next few decades. However, the broader interplay between technology, business, and society that has existed for ages is reaching a crescendo, as seen from the above examples.

Even before the pandemic, the shuffle between labor and capital enabled by technology, the shuffling of labor across national borders, and the huge demographic shifts in developed countries were posing societal challenges.
For a perspective into the global impact from longer lives, borderless labor, and tech-enabled sharing economy, see Jobsageddon.
In our post-pandemic world, it will be breathtaking to see how the following will evolve:
